Liechtenstein and the Philippines signed a double taxation agreement in Bangkok during the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The signing was a key outcome of Prime Minister Brigitte Haas’s visit to Thailand from 15 to 17 October, during which she also held bilateral talks with Italy, Portugal and Iceland.

The discussions focused on expanding Liechtenstein’s international tax treaty network, strengthening economic ties and advancing cooperation within European and international institutions.

Strengthening Economic Ties Through Tax Agreements

The agreement with the Philippines strengthens Liechtenstein’s relationship with an important economic partner in Southeast Asia, where several Liechtenstein industrial companies operate. It provides legal certainty for businesses and individuals engaged in cross-border activities, prevents the double taxation of income and facilitates trade and investment.

“The continued expansion of our network of double taxation agreements is a key part of our strategy to strengthen Liechtenstein as a business location and contributes to the competitiveness of our internationally oriented economy and financial centre,” Prime Minister Haas said.

Expanding this network was also central to her discussions with Portugal. Haas reaffirmed Liechtenstein’s interest in concluding a double taxation agreement, building on Portugal’s decision last year to remove Liechtenstein from its list of jurisdictions with preferential tax regimes.

In talks with Italy’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, the focus turned to the pending ratification of the double taxation agreement signed in 2023. Haas also called for Liechtenstein to receive the same tax treatment as EU member states and other EEA countries under Italy’s wealth tax on foreign financial assets.

Advancing Cooperation with Iceland

Alongside the tax discussions, Haas met with Iceland’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Daði Már Kristófersson, to discuss cooperation within the European Economic Area (EEA) and the two countries’ shared interests in the IMF.

She emphasised the importance of close coordination among the EEA EFTA states, particularly to ensure the timely incorporation of European financial services legislation into the EEA framework.
